Investing in Mentorship: Who You Hang Around With Matters A Lot!
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
- Jim Rohn
I believe that regardless of your level or tenure in business you will always require mentorship; you’re never too good for a mentor. It’s absolutely fundamental to your growth as a person and the continued success of your business. In fact, your business is a direct reflection of you, and if you continue to grow, your business will too.
Seek and you shall find
What I’ve found with mentorship is that the best mentors don’t come and find you; you have to actively seek them out. However, finding the right people isn’t easy, and like me, you may struggle to find them. Your mentors don’t have to be people on your doorstep and you should be prepared to travel the length of the country, and internationally if you have to. You also need to have input from different perspectives, which will come from people with different backgrounds and different industries.
Who is the right who for you?
Here are a few tips that have worked for me when trying to find and get around the right people:
- Think hard about the kind of person you are looking for. What kind of business is he in? Where would he normally hang out? What do you want to learn from him? What questions do you need answered?
- Attend the relevant conferences. Find out who the leaders are, be seen to get involved in discussions and debates, spend time introducing yourself to people and get to know the network, then…
- Organise 1:1′s and introductions. Prepare questions for meeting these people to find out if they’re right for you.
Qualify your mentors
Your mentor should have vast amounts of experience, a proven record of success, inspire you to work harder, challenge your ideas, force you to think, and be willing to help and share information with you.
When I need advice I often meet with my own mentors. For example, a restaurant owner in St Andrews, a business owner in Dundee, or a marketing expert in Edinburgh. I can also pick out some of the many books, audio CD’s and DVD’s that I have collected.
Who do you hang around with?
You are the combination of the 5 people you hang around with the most. Having the correct selection of mentors will massively change you and your business. Who are your mentors? Are they the right people for you? Think long and hard about this because who you hang around matters a lot.
Have a great week,
